Toon View - Fake Cartoon Channel Branding

So what is Toon View?  Toon View is a VERY fake (not real) cartoon channel that I came up with during the creative, evolutionary process of this project.  If you watch a lot of Cartoon Network, you might recognize that there is a little bit of inspiration drawn from some of the channel’s branding content.

In the beginning:

"Sway left, sway right.

I am a tree.

And if I fall, and no one is there to hear me,

do I make a sound?

Yes.

Because beauty is not just in the eyes of the beholder,

but in the hands of its Creator.”

I began this project with the desire to simply take a personal project (not for school or a client) all the way from conception to execution.  So to begin I needed to develop some sort of script or idea that would be the heart behind the visuals that I would create.  With that as the goal, I wrote the above poem because its content is meaningful to me and I felt that the it lent to a strong visual potential.  (I’m sure you can already see the humor in how different the original concept was from the final product.)  After writing the poem I began to create some rough storyboards that I would follow as I began to design the different elements within the video.  Everything was going great until I came to the tree falling and thought to myself, “Hmmm, maybe there needs to be a reason for the tree falling.  Oh I know… a beaver.”  That was my mistake, and it was downhill from there.  Joking aside, I am actually pleased with where the project ended up.  As it progressed it began to see something take shape that I hadn’t yet envisioned and it became a piece that I was very excited to build upon. The project forced me to go a few steps further as I had to create my own fake cartoon channel and design the branding for that, plus make up some of the channel’s “hit” shows and think of a way to incorporate the advertisement of them into the piece.

All in all I am very pleased with the way this short piece came out.  It was a very refreshing project that allowed me to explore new design elements and animation techniques.  I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I did making it!
